I've really loved Don Norman's work around mental models and cognitive artifacts. I've been diving into naturalistic decision making and expert decision making and they seem to disagree about the term mental models. They are more likely to say that there are experience prototypes that people compare and then make a decision.

Have you looked into this research much? How would you compare it?
